The East Sussex village of Robertsbridge may have fewer than 3000 residents, but boasts several claims to fame stretching from ancient history to relatively modern times. It is thought the village grew to serve the Cistercian monastery founded there in the late 12th century, one of its early abbots tasked by Parliament with ransoming Richard the Lionheart. The first abbot, Robert, possibly gave his name to the settlement, although it could be conjectured that Robert is a corruption of Rother, the river on which it stands. Cricketers may recognize the name without knowing why, the explanation being that the Nicolls of bat-makers Grey-Nicolls established a workshop there in 1876, and the company still operates in the village today. And scouts past and present could be aware that Baden-Powell formed the first cub pack there. Once famed for its cannon foundry, Robertsbridge is now a quiet place, though blessed with excellent communications: just off the A21; and on the railway line to London some 75 minutes or so away. The village is undeniably pretty, with no shortage of black and white timber-frame houses dating back to late medieval days, and for those after the rather more spectacular Bodiam Castle is a short distance east, though many visitors will be heading south to Hastings 10 miles’ drive from Robertsbridge, or Battle four miles nearer.
