Clondalkin is a village that has grown to become a busy suburb, seven miles to the west of Dublin city. At the heart of the village is its most famous landmark, visible from miles around - a complete round tower, more than 84 feet high, that's thought to date back to the 8th Century. The tall but slender tower, still bearing its original cap, rises from the site of an ancient monastery, which was founded around 100 years earlier to create the settlement of Clondalkin. The village is situated on the banks of the River Camac. It flows through Corkagh Demesne Park - Clondalkin's delightful wonderland of woodlands, wildflower meadows, gardens, fishing lakes, swimming pools and sports pitches, including purpose-built baseball fields that are used for national and international fixtures. The park is set in what were once the grounds of a manor house, now demolished. Clondalkin is also close to the scenic Grange Castle Golf Course, which boasts 155 acres of parkland. Horse-riding and swimming are also much enjoyed locally. Still, visitors staying at Clondalkin are only 20 minutes away from the centre of Dublin, an endlessly fascinating city whose timeless, historic character somehow blends perfectly with its vibrant contemporary attractions and nightlife.
