Once a tiny village, Glasnevin has mushroomed into a largely residential area of Dublin's Northside, only a couple of miles from the city centre. It's a perfect base for visitors wishing to explore Dublin's imposing, historic buildings, beautiful parks, exciting shopping streets and buzzing pubs, restaurants and arts venues. Glasnevin is itself home to some of the city's major attractions, including the Irish National Botanic Gardens. This is a wonderful place, brimming with more than 20,000 different types of plant, from orchids to cacti, in various gardens, rockeries, borders and glasshouses. There is also a visitor's centre where you can get a bite to eat, or simply wander round the informative displays. Nearby is the famous Glasnevin Cemetery, the final resting place of many prominent Irish revolutionaries, politicians and writers. Here, there are guided walking tours of the most notable graves, including those of Daniel O'Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell, Eamon DeValera, Brendan Behan and Michael Collins. A more recent addition to Glasnevin's attractions is The Helix, a huge arts complex which opened in 2002 with several halls and exhibition galleries for all kinds of ENTERTAINMENT, ranging from plays and musical and orchestral concerts to family and art events, ballets and ice shows.
