The coastal suburb of Sandymount is one of Dublin's most desirable neighbourhoods. Situated on the south side of Dublin Bay, where picturesque boats and yachts sail in and out of beautiful waters, the district also retains a village atmosphere, with a central, triangular green, elegant, tree-lined streets, and a variety of fashionable bars, cafés, restaurants and shops. There is a strong sense of literary history too. Poet WB Yeats, who was born here, is immortalised by a bust in the village green, and Sandymount Strand features as a setting in noteworthy scenes from James Joyce's 'Ulysses'. The strand is more a tidal mudflat than a beach - not perfect for swimming, but much-loved by bird-watchers, dog-walkers and families enjoying a stroll by the sea, along a very nice promenade. A Martello tower forms a memorable landmark part of the way along the strand. Sandymount is well-known for its sports clubs, and it has a good gym, health and leisure centre. Only a couple of miles from the city centre, Sandymount is well within walking distance of Dublin with all its wonderful buildings, shopping districts, cultural attractions, entertainment and nightlife. Excellent public transport options are available for the less agile, or for anyone in a hurry.
