Loch Rannoch is a large body of fresh water in Perth and Kinross, Scotland, 20 miles west of Pitlochry and 20 miles north-west of Aberfeldy. At the east end of Loch Rannoch is the beginning of Loch Tummel. The Hydro-electric Reservoir sits between the two Lochs and nearby is the small remote village of Kinloch Rannoch which is a tourist and outdoor pursuits centre. Loch Rannoch flows in an east-west direction, approximately 15km long and 1km wide. Along the south shore lays The Tay Forest Park in Rannoch Forest and the Blackwood of Rannoch once part of the ancient Caledonian Forest. The whole area is tranquil and picturesque with spectacular views of Schiehallion to the north. To the west lies the vast expanse of Rannoch Moor and on the Loch is a crannog, an ancient artificial island consisting of timber framework reinforced with stone upon which huts were built, they are though to have originated before 2000BC and were used as a defence houses by the ancient celts. The loch and surrounding area offers fishing, walking and a variety of activities. There are various places to stay in the area and on the north shore of the Loch is the Loch Rannoch Hotel and Holiday Resort.
