Muthill (pronounced Mew-thil) looks across the River Earn from a north facing slope in Strathearn, Perth and Kinross, Scotland, 3 miles south of Crieff and is on the route of the Coast to Coast Walk from Oban to St. Andrews. Muthil is a Conservation area with many buildings listed. The ancient village founded by Culdee Monks was once an important religious centre, a visible reminder of this is the 15th century pre-reformation church, the foundations date back to 9th century, the once detached 21ft square bell-tower dates from 12th century, with late Anglo-Saxon round headed two-light windows, the tower contains a Christian cross-slab and an effigy of the Earl and Countess of Strathern. The church is care for by Historic Scotland, entrance is free of charge. Muthil was badly burnt by retreating Jacobites in revenge for the battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715 and then rebuilt by the Drummond Earls of Perth in 1740’s. Drummond Castle, 1491 stand 3kms north with formal Italianate gardens containing elegant statues, 1830. The gardens are open daily. Muthil museum housed in a Georgian cottage built 1769 near the old church details local history and folk life of this Strathearn village.
