The parish of Little Bookham lies along the A246 trunk road from Leatherhead to Guildford. The parish has existed since at least the late 7th century, which is when the first documentary evidence can be found. Little Bookham and Great Bookham have been distinct since at least the time of the Domesday Book of 1086 and both are home to 16th and 17th century houses. Nearby are the Bookham Commons, divided into Little Bookham Common and Great Bookham Common. The site is owned by the National Trust and is a designated Site of Specific Scientific Interest. It is noted for its variety of plant communities, its breeding birds and invertebrates. Little Bookham Common is comprised mainly of scrub and rough grassland. Bookham railway station, situated in Little Bookham, was opened in 1885 and still serves both Greater and Little Bookham. It is currently managed by South West Trains. Jane Austen is believed to have spent time in Bookham whilst writing her novels in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It has been noted that her novel 'Emma' is geographically consistent with the area. If you are looking for accommodation in Little Bookham, you could try the Preston Cross Hotel, built in Victorian times and set in beautiful grounds.
