Surbiton has been affectionately nicknamed Suburbiton because of its quiet character. But that's all part of the appeal of this residential town, situated on the Thames near the border between Surrey and west London. Commuters are attracted by Surbiton's pleasant riverside location, its green spaces, its fast trains into London and its convenient access to the M25 and A3. The "River Roads", containing listed buildings and historic houses, form the priciest and most exclusive area of the town. Surbiton was an agricultural village until the coming of the railways. Now, it has a prospering town centre in which small shops co-exist with high-street stores and supermarkets, and bar and café culture thrives alongside older pubs and restaurants. Fishponds Park, a nature conservation area with ponds and a stream, is a popular spot, sited in the former grounds of an 18th Century house. Visitors to Surbiton will not only enjoy their proximity to central London but the spread of attractions on the doorstep. The fabulous Hampton Court Palace is easily reached, and Kew Gardens and Richmond Park are also close by. Neighbouring Kingston, with its excellent shopping, vivid nightlife and Thames boat trips, is just a walk away, along the river.
