Boat of Garten is a scenic village in the Highlands of Scotland situated in the Cairngorms National Park, high on the west bank of the River Spey between Grantown-on-Spey and Aviemore. Boat of Garten was previously known from c1600 as Gart but renamed in 1863 to the same name as the ferry and the newly built railway station. The railway closed in 1965 however; the scenic Strathspey Railway line, complete with authentic steam train was re-opened close to the centre of the village in 1978 linking Boat of Garten to Aviemore. Boat of Garten is a popular tourist resort attracting visitors preferring a more tranquil resort to nearby Aviemore. There are hotels, holiday accommodation and a camp and caravan site, two general stores and a post office. Boat of Garten is known as ‘The Osprey Village’ with the Abernethy Forest RSPB Reserve beside Loch Garten, the Observation Centre is open daily for bird-watching. The Golf and Tennis Club was established in 1898 on the riverside, with an 18-hole golf-course. There are facilities to fish in the Spey, cycle-tracks, forest trails and various hillsides to walk, climb or Ski. The last stretch of the Speyside Way, a long distance footpath, leads through Boat of Garten finishing at Aviemore.
