Cromarty is a well-preserved historic town on the east-coast of the Highlands of Scotland situated at the mouth of the Moray Firth at the easternmost point of the Black Isle. Cromarty was established as a Royal Burgh in the13th century. The town was developed in 1772 by George Ross, owner of the Cromarty Estate, building a brewery, a hand-loom factory, the Courthouse, the harbour and Cromarty House, which replaced the old castle. The town has many architecturally interesting Georgian buildings, cafes, restaurants, pubs, hotels and holiday accommodations. There is a bakery, library, general store, post office and at the east end of the village in the Old Fisher-town are antique shops and a working pottery. The award winning Cromarty Courthouse Museum has local history demonstrations. The Hugh Miller Museum and Birthplace Cottage is a 17th century, thatched, three story Georgian villa, maintained by the National Trust for Scotland dedicated to the local writer and geologist. Cromarty boasts beautiful sandy beaches with coastal walks. There is a fine natural harbour home to the smallest car-ferry in Scotland operating between Cromarty and Nigg. There are boat tours around the scenic country-side; there are dolphins in the Firth, bird reserves and abundant wildlife. Other out-doors activities including golf, walking, sea-fishing and mountain-bike hire.
