Dalwhinnie is a tiny village and the highest in the Highlands of Scotland at 358m above sea-level. Dalwhinnie is situated north of Drumochter at the head of Loch Ericht and Glen Truim. Dalwhinnie has been in existence since c1700, when an inn was built to serve the Highland Cattle drovers on there way to the market in Crief. General Wade was responsible for building the first road here in 1724; this road was the predecessor to today’s A9. Dalwhinnie has also had railway station on the Highland Main Line from Perth to Inverness since 1863. Dalwhinnie is famous for the whiskey produced here, the light, heathery Dalwhinnie Single Malt Scotch. The distillery in the mountains is noted as being the highest distillery in Scotland. The distillery dates back to 1897, it stands close to the banks of the River Spey and has a high quality visitor centre and distillery tours. The village has a dispersed settlement, with a village hall, the Dalwhinnie Hotel which stands near the railway station, there are houses scattered around the junction of the old road and the railway station, the distillery is at the north end and the Inn at Loch Ericht is at the south side.
