Evanton is a large village in Easter Ross in the Highlands of Scotland with Ben Wyvis rising to the west and the Cromarty Firth to the south, Evanton is situated 7 miles north of Dingwall and 15 miles north of Inverness. Evanton dates from the early 19th century during the Highland Clearances when the local laird Evan Fraser of Baconie cleared his estate for sheep and planned this township near the newly built road between the River Glass (or Allt Graad) and the River Sgitheach. Evanton is a popular tourist resort and an ideal base to tour the Highlands. The village has hotels and a caravan and campsite, shop, post-office, tea-room, village hall, two churches and a few businesses. The nearest railway station is at Alness. Attractions include the Black Rock of Novar, used in the Harry Potter film The Goblet of Fire, it is a two mile long ravine more than 100ft deep surrounded by beautiful scenery and wildlife. Nearby is the Fyrish Monument erected on Fyrish Hill by Sir Hector Munro in the late 18th century, thought to represent the gates of Negapatnam in south India. The Highland Museum of Childhood is in neighbouring Strathpeffer, Dingwall has a Heritage Museum, Dalmore Distillery and two RSPB nature reserves are located near the Cromarty Firth.
