Fort Augustus is a historic village in the north-west Highlands of Scotland situated at the south-west end of Loch Ness. The settlement was originally named St.Cummein after the Saint, who built the first church, but was re-named after William Augustus, son of King George II, when a Fort was built after a Jacobite defeat in 1715. Historically interesting structures include an Iron Age crannog, an artificial island called Cherry Island lying in Loch Ness nearby, the Caledonian Canal was built in 1822 and passes through Fort Augustus at the location of a lock able to raise and lower boats and the ruins of Invergarry Castle are to the south of Fort Augustus. Fort Augustus is a popular tourist resort with ‘The Great Glen Way’ passing through the village. Facilities include a tourist information centre, shops, bars, restaurants, hotels and B&B’s. There are many attractions including the Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre and the Clansman Centre; dispalying Highland culture, clan weaponry and the opportunity to have photographs taken in Highland period costume. There are boat-trips operating from Fort Augustus offering tours and fishing trips to Loch Ness. There is an out-door pursuits centre, guided forest walks to enjoy the scenery and wildlife and there is a 9-hole golf course.
