Fortrose is a historic village on the Black Isle in the Mid and Easter Ross area in the Highland region of Scotland situated opposite Fort George overlooking the Moray Firth. Fortrose began in 1455 when the settlements of Chanonry and Rosemarkie were united by the Bishop of Ross as an ecclesiastical burgh which was awarded the status of Royal Burgh in 1592. The village grew around Fortrose Cathedral, the red-sandstone ruins stand in Cathedral Square in the centre of the village. Fortrose is positioned on flat ground on top of the low cliff-tops above the shore-line, there is a narrow High Street with shops and amenities and a picturesque harbour which is home to the Chanonry Sailing Club. Surrounded by beautiful scenery and a variety of wildlife Fortrose is a popular holiday destination and an ideal base for touring the neighbouring attractions, there are b&b's, self-catering accommodation and a camping and caravanning park. Chanonry Point is a scenic view-point for watching the Dolphins in the Moray Firth, the North Kessock Dolphin and Seal Centre also gives the opportunity to observe wildlife in their natural habitat and there are shore excursions and sightseeing tours available from the nearby Port of Invergordon. Other attractions include the Black Isle Brewery, and the Glen Ord Distillery, the Black Isle Fitness Centre and the Fortrose and Rosemarkie 18-hole golf course.
