Grantown-on-Spey is a town, known as the Capital of Strathspey, situated in the Badenoch and Strathspey area in the Central Highlands of Scotland, lying on the River Spey at the north-side of the Cairngorms National Park, 14 miles from Aviemore. Surrounded by the ancient Caledonian forest, Grantown-on-Spey was a planned Georgian town, named and designed by James Grant in 1766. The 16th century Ballindalloch Castle home to the Macpherson-Grants, since 1546, stands 15 miles down the valley. The town has many historically interesting buildings with Georgian and Victorian architecture. The Railway arrived in 1863 and the town has been a popular holiday resort ever since. The most famous visitor to the town was Queen Victoria in 1860. Grantown-on-Spey has a variety of shops and amenities, cafes, bars, restaurants and a museum, it is abundant with B&B’s, self-catering accommodation, hotels, it also has a camping and caravanning site and a hostel; popular with walkers on The Speyside Way, the long distance footpath which passes Grantown. There are many walks over the surrounding hills and marked trails in the Anagach Woods. Other activities include golf, tennis, bowls, pony-trekking and fishing in the Spey. The nearby Cairngorms Mountains offer skiing and climbing and the Rothiemurchus Highland Estate near Aviemore has water-sports.
