Invergarry is an attractive village in the Highlands of Scotland lying where the River Garry enters Loch Oich; which forms part of the Caledonian Canal. Invergarry is situated in the Great Glen between Loch Ness and Loch Lochty, 25 miles north of Fort William. Invergarry is well-know as the 17th century stronghold of the MacDonells of Glen Garry. They built Invergarry Castle, a five story L-plan tower house, on Ravens Rock on the west bank of Loch Oich. The castle has a turbulent history and was frequently attacked until finally in 1746 it was partially blown up by the Duke of Cumberland and never rebuilt. Another imposing building in the village is the Glengarry Castle Hotel dating from c1869, previously known as Invergarry House; it over-looks Loch Oich and has the ruins of Invergarry Castle in the grounds. There are hotels, restaurants, bars and tea-rooms in the area, the village has many visitor attractions and activities including fishing for Salmon, Brown Trout and Pike on Loch Oich and the River Garry. Glengarry Forest has a visitor centre and scenic walks. The Falls of Glomach are one of the highest waterfalls in Britain. Nearby attractions include Ben Nevis and Loch Ness offering a range of activities from Monster Cruises to mountaineering.
