Invermoriston is a small village in the Highlands of Scotland situated along the west shore of Loch Ness overlooking the Great Glen, 7 miles north of Fort Augustus. Invermoriston dates back to c1600; forestry was the main industry with a saw-mill in operation c1640. The village grew from 1813 with the new-roads system built making access easier. Most of the buildings in the village are traditional white, there is a hotel, a shop and local amenities, a café/restaurant and a clog and craft shop. The area is abundant with hotels and holiday accommodation including self-catering lodges and a caravan park. Invermoriston is a popular tourist resort and an ideal location for touring the Highlands and walking the challenging Great Glen Way; a 73 mile long distance footpath stretching from Fort William to Inverness. Historical features include the Thomas Telford Bridge, built over the River Moriston Falls in 1813 to form a road between Fort Augustus and Drumnadrochit. Attractions include the Sron Na Muic peak and the Caledonian Canal which crosses Scotland via the Great Glen. Activities include organised walks with qualified guides to explore the wild countryside; Kayaking, Canoeing, cycling, golfing and fishing are also available. The historic remains of Urquahart Castle stand at nearby Loch Ness and Drumnadrochit offers monster-spotting cruises, visitor centre and exhibitions.
