Kingussie is a small historic town in the Badnoch and Strathspey area in the Central Highlands of Scotland, situated 3 miles from Newtonmore. Kingussie was granted burgh of Barony in 1464. The old fortified ruins of the18th century Ruthven Barracks sit opposite town on the banks of the Spey, maintained by Historic Scotland and open to the public, the Barracks were last occupied in 1745 by Jacobites heading to their defeat at nearby Culloden. Kingussie was a planned town by the Duke of Gordon in 1799, the town stands at the head of the ancient Caledonian pine forest. The railway arrived in 1863 and the town became a popular holiday resort. The town has a park, a variety of shops and amenities, cafes, restaurants, hotels and B&B’s. Attractions include the golf course built 1890, fishing in the Spey, the Highland Folk Museum with history of Highland life, The Highland Wildlife Park situated 5 miles north near Kincraig and The RSPB Insh Marshes Nature Reserve. There are many walking trails including the ‘Speyside Way’ and the ‘Monarch Trail’. The area is abundant with distilleries with Dalwhinnie Distillery the nearest. Lochs of Badnoch and Strathspey have water-sports including sailing, wind-surfing and canoeing, the nearby Cairngorms Mountains offer snow-sports and climbing.
