Kinlochleven is a picturesque village at the head of Loch Leven in the Highlands of Scotland, situated 20 miles south of Fort William. Kinlochleven grew from the tiny hamlets of Kinlochmore and Kinlochbeag, due to the growth of industry to the area in 1907 with an aluminium smelter, followed by a hydro-electric factory. The village lies is on the West Highland Way, a long distance footpath stretching 93 miles across the Scottish Highlands. Kinlochleven is a popular visitor resort ideal for walking, climbing, cycling, fishing and nature-watching. The village has local shops and amenities, pubs, a selection of holiday accommodation and plenty of places to eat. Attractions include local walks leading around the Lodge that King Edward VII stayed in 1909 and the remains of a WW2 POW camp, the Aluminium Story Visitor Centre, The Ice Factor; an indoor climbing centre for rock and ice climbing, with sauna, steam room and plunge pool, and the Atlas Brewery; which offers guided tours, the beer can be sampled in the local pubs. Freshwater-fishing is available on River Leven and sea-fishing on Loch Leven. There are Ski-Centres at Aonon Mor and Glencoe, other attractions include the Glencoe Visitor Centre, the Glencoe and North Lorn Folk Museum and the Lochaber Watersports with yacht cruises, dinghy and canoe hire in Ballachulish.
