Mallaig is a picturesque town and busy working fishing port in the West Highlands of Scotland, situated at the end of the ‘Road to the Isles’ 35 miles from Fort William. The town grew from 1901 with the coming of the railway and construction of the steamer pier, allowing access for boats and ferries. Mallaig has impressive mountain and coastal scenery with the Silver Sands beaches stretching between Mallaig and Arisaig. The town is a popular tourist resort with a selection of holiday accommodation. Mallaig has a selection of shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes, a swimming pool and fitness centre and cycle hire. The Heritage Centre depicting the history and culture of the area is by the harbour near the Mallaig Marine World. The Watersedge, on the pier in the Main Street, houses the Tourist Information, a gift-shop and coffee-shop. CalMac Ferries operate from Mallaig to the Isle of Skye, the Knoydart peninsula and the Small Isles of Eigg, Rum, Muck and Canna. There are also sea-cruises for guided wildlife-spotting and sight-seeing tours and driving tours from Fort William to the Isle of Skye. Mallaig is on the West Highland Railway operating a Jacobite Steam Train, used in the Harry Potter films. Mallaig and Morar Highland Games are held each August.
