Tain is an ancient Royal Burgh in the Highlands of Scotland situated on the south-side of the Dornoch Firth. Tain’s original charter was granted in 1066 by Malcolm Canmore, making Tain Scotland’s oldest Burgh. Tain is a town of great antiquity and character with interesting architecture. The oldest buildings are the three churches dedicated to St. Duthac, with St. Duthus Church built c1370. The old Tolbooth dates 1706-33 with the baronial-style court-house attached dating 1848. The Town Hall, Royal Hotel, Parish Church and Museum were all built by the Maitland family in the 19th century. Tain has beautiful countryside, quiet beaches and is a popular tourist resort with hotels, guest houses and plenty of places to eat out. The High Street has a wide range of shops from supermarkets to a garden centre and there are often market stalls in the town centre. Tain has a golf course, sports and recreation clubs with swimming pool and a play-park, there are scenic walks, cycling, fishing and an abundance of wildlife. Tain hosts a Summer Gala with The Red-Arrow display, parachute displays, country shows, pipe bands and children’s entertainers. Tain’s Highland Gathering is held in August in the Glenmorangie Distillery grounds with a range of Highland games, helicopter rides and children’s events. The Glenmorangie Distillery is north-west of Tain famous for its single-malt whiskey.
