Ellon is a historic market town in north-east Scotland situated 17 miles north of Aberdeen and 13 miles north-west of Inverurie at a crossing on the Ythan Estuary Ellon was once the capital of Buchan burned by Robert the Bruce in 1308 for the ‘Harrying of Buchan’ after the defeat of the Comyns, although the original settlement dates back to the Pictish era. The town is a popular tourist destination with hotels, self-catering accommodation and B&B’s, it has a community centre and swimming pool, fishing, tennis and an 18-hole championship links golf course. The store and pottery barn is a farm-shop selling traditional home-grown farm produce with the opportunity to throw a pot. Historically interesting features include Ellon Castle dating back to 1780 and Haddo House an elegant mansion built in 1731 designed by William Adam. Attractions include Pitmedden Garden; a walled garden originally laid out in 1675 by Sir Alexander Seton and the Tolquhon Gallery with exhibits of paintings and sculptures by British artists. The Forvie National Nature Reserve is next to the Ythan Estury, with the largest breeding colony of Eider duck in the UK and the biggest breeding colony of Sandwich Terns in Scotland. The well-known Ythan Raft Race is held annually running from Ellon to neighbouring Logie Buchan each summer.
