Forres is an ancient town on the Moray coast in the north of Scotland, situated between Nairn and Elgin, 30 miles east of Inverness. Forres is one of Scotland’s oldest towns, steeped in history, thought to be shown as ‘Varris’ on maps dating back 2000 years. The Public Park is on the site where the Royal Forres Castle would have stood c.900. Forres was awarded Royal Burgh status in1140 and mentioned in Shakespeare’s Macbeth as the location of Duncan’s Castle. Forres is a market town with parks, gardens and fine buildings including the Tolbooth built in1838, the Mercat Cross dating 1844, the Gothic St. Laurence Church with beautiful stonework built in1904, the octagonal Nelsons Tower built1806 and the Falconer Museum built in1869. Historical monuments include the Sueno Stone a 20ft high Pictish cross-slab dating c800’s. There are camping-sites and caravan parks, B&B’s, hotels, and guest houses in and around the area. Forres is well equipped for tourists with its Golf course, sandy beaches, Moray Firth Dolphins, sailing, riverside and forest walks, fishing and horse-riding. The Dallas Dhu Distillery, once a working distillery, was re-opened by Historic Scotland to demonstrate the malt whiskey process. The nearby Benromach Distillety is a working distillery and has visitor tours.
