Gamrie is a small village on the shore of the Moray Firth, on the side of a north facing cliff near Banff in Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland. Gamrie is the local name for the village more widely known as Gardenstown named after its founder Alexander Garden in 1720. Originally a fishing port, the village is positioned on steep terraces in the cliffs above the south-east side of Gamrie Bay. The heart of the village surrounds the harbour with its pier, the older houses stand next to the sea and the newer ones in rows on the ledges up the cliffs with a single curved road linking the community. Gamrie is a thriving village and a popular tourist destination with shops and amenities, hotel, local pub, an excellent fish restaurant, which has to be booked in advance. There are ruins and historic buildings including the remains of the pre-reformation St Johns church built in 1513 to commemorate defeating a Viking attack in 1004. Gamrie Lodge is a listed building and an example of a four story Regency Buchan dating c1828. The area offers many activities including golf, riding, fishing, cycling and walking. The coastline is the home of many sea-birds nesting in the crags and crevices in the cliffs.
