Stonehaven is a town in Aberdeenshire on the east coast of Scotland, situated between Montrose and Aberdeen, in a sheltered position looking out to the North Sea. Stonehaven was granted burgh of barony in 1607. Stonehaven has a unique Fireball Festival to celebrate the New Year, where participants swing fireballs around on the end of chains before eventually throwing them into the harbour. Stonehaven grew around an Iron Age fishing village, an archaeological site 4 miles north-west, found evidence of ancient settlements with ring cairns dating from 2nd-3rd millennium BC and the best preserved Roman earthwork in Grampian dating 84AD. Historically interesting structures include the17th century Tolbooth, now a museum of local heritage, The Mercat Cross and the Town House dating from1790. On the cliff-top lie the ruins of the 13th century church and nearby are Dunnottar Castle, Muchalls Castle and Fetteresso Castle. Stonehaven was once a busy fishing port, now it is popular tourist resort with inn, hotel B&B, a picturesque harbour area with pubs, and a restaurant and gift shop. Stonehaven’s Bay has a long beautiful sandy beach. Stonehaven has a variety of sporting and recreational facilities including a swimming pool, leisure centre, 18-hole golf course and Nature Reserve. The Highland Games are held each July.
