It is the town with no streets. Bombs, bullets and missiles, have formed the backbone of its economy since the Second World War – yet Bishopton is a modest little town of little more than 1,000 residents. Situated South of the River Clyde, in Renfrewshire, a stone’s throw from the Erskine Bridge, Bishopton is a short drive along the M8 from Glasgow, and since the enforced purchase of farmland in 1941, the village has been synonymous with the Royal Ordnance Factory, run by the MOD for over 40 years before being privatised in 1984. The site took over 2,000 acres of farmland, and provided up to 3,000 jobs in its heyday. It was an important source of jobs for the Clydeside region, and with the creation of homes for the MOD police, it helped make Bishopton the town it is today. Indeed, in helping to keep the Third Reich at arm’s length, you could argue that it helped make the world what it is today. Now Bishopton is facing uncertainty, with the Royal Ordnance Factory’s owners, BAE, proposing the the sale of its land. This could possible lead to the the town’s population expanding beyond all recognition, and many residents have opposed any such move. Whatever happens, Bishopton could well see its first street, and after all these years with just avenues, crescents and drives, could be the start of a whole new dawn for the town.
