For all Busby is a village in its own right, administered by East Renfrewshire Council, it feels just like an ex-tension of Glasgow, a suburb on the White Cart Water that stretches all the way through Glasgow’s South-side. Just six miles from Glasgow, Busby’s history stretches back 700 years, when it was but a small settlement of cottages, aligned by the Cart. It wasn’t until 1780, when the Busby Cotton Mill opened up on the opposite side of the River Cart that the Busby that we know today began to coalesce. Every town needs an industry to sustain it, and the mill saw Busby take shape around Easter Busby, Wester Busby, Busbyside, and Ryat. The new cotton mill at Newmill, Cartsbridge attracted more people to come and settle there. While the cotton mill, and latterly, Busby’s printworks, would go into decline; once Busby had a railway sta-tion it had an arterial link to the city, and could survive as a commuter suburb. And where else would John Milton take his inspiration from when writing Paradise Lost? Well, none other than the Busby Hotel’s bar – not the first place that would spring to mind, but on careful reflection, why not? If only we could ask Milton what it was about Busby that so inspired his prodigious grasp of blank verse.
