Cambuslang is an ancient town in South Lanarkshire in Scotland situated to east of Rutherglen, south of the River Clyde, 6 miles south-east of Glasgow. The town is known as ‘The largest village in Scotland’ and is the birthplace of Midge Ure the lead-singer of the pop band Ultravox and author Robin Jenkins who’s most famous novel was ‘The Cone-Gatherers’. Remains have been discovered throughout the town during housing developments which give evidence that settlers have lived in the area since the Iron Age. Cambuslang developed during the 18th century with handloom weaving becoming an industrial centre with coal mining, iron and steel works. Cambuslang is a popular tourist destination with hotels and holiday accommodation, shops, cafes and restaurants, churches and the 27 acre Cambuslang Park with the Borgie Glen, pathways, woodland areas, a pond, sport pitches, and a bandstand dating back to the 18th century. The village has excellent road and rail links making it the ideal base for touring local attractions in Hamilton, East Kilbride and Lanark. Nearby in the City of Glasgow there is excellent shopping, fine dining, and selection of pubs, theatres, cinemas and night-life and for a more relaxed atmosphere a visit to Loch Lomond, Scotland’s largest inland Loch is recommended with the National Nature Reserve, wildlife, breathtaking scenery, boat-cruises and paddle steamer tours.
