Sandwiched between its larger Renfrewshire neighbours, Johnstone and Paisley, Elderslie is a small town whose most famous son grew up to be the 13th Century scourge of the English during the First Wars of Scot-tish Independence. There is still some debate as to William Wallace’s birthplace but Elderslie’s residents will hear none of it; Wallace, the country’s most iconic hero, is theirs. Declaring him in stone, the town erected their own Wallace monument in 1912, close to where Wallace once resided as a child. Wallace was educated at the nearby Pais-ley Abbey, after which his exploits at Stirling and beyond became the stuff of legend. Elderslie is an old settlement, really old – it’s roots grew in the Neolithic period, and throughout the Indus-trial Revolution it grew with an economy centred around coal mining, whisky, and paper. Its canal provided it with an arterial route to Glasgow, and was only drained after the railway linking Glasgow and Ayr passed through the town. As Elderslie modernised, one industry became dominant; the carpet industry. Elderslie may now exist principally as a commuter town, Glasgow and Paisley are within a short drive, but when Stod-dart’s Carpets were enjoying their heyday, their floral shag-piles carpeted the Titanic, Concorde, and West-minster Abbey.
