Under the shadow of the suspension bridge that takes its name sits Erskine, a small, Renfrewshire town on the River Clyde’s south bank. Erskine is primarily a commuter town – 30 minutes from Glasgow, or less when the going is good – and has grown in recent years as Glasgow’s population has spilt over onto its surrounding settlements. The town is well-served by road, and is just ten minutes from Glasgow Airport. Erskine’s residents do not have to travel far to enjoy the spoils of the Scottish countryside; Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park are nearby, and the Clyde’s pristine sea lochs make for an enjoyable weekend road trip. Erskine has a long association with war veterans, after the opening of the Erskine Hospital in 1916 to treat the servicemen and woman who fought in World War One. A registered charity, Erskine opened a new home for veterans in Anniesland, Glasgow, in November 2007, and houses a some 1,300 veterans, aged between 23 and 100-years-old. The town is also home to John Smeaton, a man who rose to cult celebrity status for his part in tackling the two terrorists that attempted to drive a jeep into Glasgow airport. He was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal for his efforts in ‘setting about’ the terrorists, and briefly brought the broad Glasgow vernacular to the world’s satellite news channels.
