Hidden on the steep inclines of Hill Street and Scott Street, near Glasgow’s City Centre, Garnethill is a bus-tling, colourful municipality. With a large Chinese community living in the area, Garnethill is a most multicultural and cosmopolitan set-tlement, with a strong sense of identity that brims with culture. The Chinese New Year brings dragons and firecrackers to the street, and there are a number of Chinese supermarkets close at hand that are a cornuco-pia of delights – if you are after dried squid, tamarind pulp, or kaffir lime leaves, head for Garnethill. There are also some examples of outstanding architecture in the area: Glasgow School of Art was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and continues to inspire and educate the country’s top new artists; and Saint Aloysius’ College was awarded the prize of Scotland’s Best New Building in 2004 for Clavius Building, the school’s new centre for science and mathematics. Saint Aloysius’ is one of Scotland’s most highly regarded schools, and is run in the Jesuit tradition. Saint Alo-ysius’ Church, Rose Street, is also a magnificent example of Renaissance design, and was built in 1910 by Bel-gian architect Charles Menart; it’s interior was finished in 1927 by Ernest Schaufelburg, whose designs made the church one of the country’s most ornate churches. The Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT), also on Rose Street, is held in religious reverence by the city’s film buffs, showing a wide range of arthouse, documentary, foreign, and mainstream films – it is a key venue in the city’s film festival.
