The Renfrewshire town of Langbank owes both its name and its existence to the River Clyde, on whose banks it sits proudly. Langbank in Auld Scots’ parlance means ‘long bank’, and the town hugs the waterside in the Inverclyde region. It is an area that witnesses the Clyde widening into an estuarine environment, once home to heavy industry and some remarkable wildlife. Naturally, the latter suffered from Glasgow’s industrial age but the regeneration of river systems can be startlingly swift, and now as the West of Scotland’s economy recovers and renews itself, so too the its river. Salmon have now returned to its system, a sure sign of environmental resurrection. Langbank’s relationship with the Clyde stretches way back to 1841; when the railway to Gourock passed through the area, the town became a commuter suburb for Glasgow – the city was, after all, now less than an hour away, and the serene atmosphere of a river suburb drew many to Langbank. With the A8 running straight through it, the town is easily accessible, and is on the same route from Glasgow as Port Glasgow, Greenock, and ultimately Gourock. Exploring the River Clyde is crucial to understanding Glasgow and its surrounding areas; in its industrial heyday, the Clyde put Glasgow (and indeed the West Of Scotland) on the map, and by the shores of Langbank the now abandoned timber banks, once used in the shipbuilding industry, tell a tale of an area that has taken a new career path, embracing a new future of redevelopment and renewal.
