Known as the Cradle of the Royal Stewarts, the town of Renfrew in the West of Scotland has been in league with royalty for centuries. Renfrew was granted Royal Burgh status in 1397. All of the High Stewart Kings were laid to rest on the grounds of nearby Paisley Abbey, and the area of Renfrewshire was the stamping ground of a young man from Elderslie by the name of William Wallace. He and his family were vassals of the Stewart Kings, and per-haps it was here in the bosom of Renfrewshire that the radical patriotism that sustained the resistance during the First War of Scottish Independence was born. It is mildly ironic that it would be King James VI Stewart that would see the Marriage of the Thistle and The Rose unite the crowns of Scotland and England, when so much blood was spilt in his name. Nowadays it is Prince Charles who holds the position as the Baron of Ren-frew, and, thankfully, medieval bloodshed is now a thing firmly of the past. Renfrew only relinquished its status as administrative hub for Renfrewshire in 1975, when the government set about augmenting the structure of local government throughout the UK. Renfrew’s larger cousin Paisley now shoulders this burden, and Renfrew is now a town with a large commuter population. Just six miles from Glasgow, and a short drive from Paisley, Renfrew has excellent transport links, and is on hand for Glas-gow airport. Those addicted to shopping will find the shopping complex at Braehead to be just the fix they need, and all those driven to the edge by melting credit cards and screaming children can let off some steam at the adjoining X-scape centre, where snowboarding is among the many bone threatening activities for adrenaline junkies to get their jollies. Sitting where the River Cart joins the River Clyde, Renfrew made its money in shipbuilding, in the days when Glasgow and all of the towns on the Clyde donned tools and broke sweat on the yards. Times have changed, but like many towns in the west of Scotland, Renfrew has recovered through a balanced diet of retail and en-gineering.
