Coaltown of Balgonie is a historic village in south-central Fife in Scotland situated on a ridge between the Ore and Leven waters, 2 miles east of Glenrothes and 1 mile south of Markinch. The small idyllic village developed during the 18th century with industries including coal-mining and hand-loom weaving. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, the tranquil Coaltown of Balgonie is a popular tourist destination ideal for walking, cycling, golfing, fishing and nature-watching, there are holiday accommodation, shops and amenities, a bowling club, a Miners Institute and 1 mile north-west stands the impressive Balgonie Castle with ‘Keep’ dating back to the 14th century, one of the oldest in Fife, the castle has an extensive, colourful history and is believed to be haunted. The town of Glenrothes is close by with the Kingdom Shopping Centre which fills the areas south side with many chain stores, shops, cafes, restaurants, The Rothes Halls theatre, Public Library and bowling alley. Outside the centre complex there are pubs, bars, a night club, a bingo hall and hotels. The sports centre contains an international sized swimming pool, squash courts and fitness rooms. There are tennis courts and putting green, Glenrothes also has two golf courses, Glenrothes and Balbirnie
