Leslie is a quiet rural community in central Fife, developed along a ridge sheltered on the north by the Lomond Hills, west of Glenrothes overlooking the River Leven. Leslie was originally known as Fettykil until 1283 when Norman de Leslie obtained a grant of land. Leslie was made a burgh of barony in 1458. The principal industry was handloom weaving and by the 19th century the town flourished as a centre of spinning, bleaching and papermaking. Leslie’s medieval layout consisted of the Church on the Green, marking the centre of the village, and houses at the head of Green Wynd. Leslie Church built in 1868 replaced earlier churches; at the front is the Bullstone, a relic of county fair entertainment and a reminder of the cruel sport of bull-bating. The forty inch high stone has a groove running around the middle was where a bull was tethered, bulldogs originally bred for this purpose, were encouraged to attack the bull. The High Street consists of many historical buildings including the Town Hall 1872, the Parish Church 1879, a Baptish church 1880, a variety of shops, pubs and other amenities. Nearby Strathendry Castle c1600 and Leslie House 1667, have interesting histories and architectural features.
