Newburgh is a small historic town on the Firth of Tay, situated in a remote north-west corner of Fife. It was founded in 1266, by the monks of Lindores Abbey as a market town. Early Newburgh thrived on weaving, fruit harvesting and salmon fishing and was a royal burgh by 1631. Newburgh port was built during 18th century, the economy prospered by exporting linen, salmon and stone from the three quarries. Salmon fishing continues but the main industry now is tourism. Newburgh has many architecturally interesting buildings including The Parish Church, hotel and taverns; Georgian Town House built 1808 sits on the south side of the high street. There are a few shops and local services, a Library and museum, open during summer. A recreational waterfront was built on the site of the old linoleum factory Remains of the MacDuff Cross is sited on a high hill, with panoramic views over looking Newburgh, the Tay and across to the Grampians. It is believed the cross marks where the clan MacDuff was granted rights of sanction for the murder of Macbeth. The Mugdrum Cross, a carved pillar of grey sandstone stands in the grounds of Mugdrum House. It appears to be Pictish c.1300 years old. The island of Mugdrum lies opposite the village providing nesting grounds for birds
