Queensferry is a village on the Fife side of the Firth of Forth dominated by the Forth Rail and Road Bridges, ten miles from Edinburgh. The village is sited on the narrowest part of the Forth, the most natural point of crossing; Queen Margaret regularly crossed the Forth by ferry from the village which became known as the Queen’s Ferry, although there is evidence it was a settlement long before. The oldest existing building is the ruined medieval chapel of St. James the Apostle abandoned after the reformation. The main street is a stretch of irregular houses, The Albert Hotel and taverns dating from 17th century. At the north end is the Waterloo Well, 1818-16, with rusticated stone front and plaque carved with a ship at anchor. The Forth Rail Bridge opened 1890. The ferries stopped when the Road Bridge was opened to traffic in 1964.Visible relics of the ferries include the Town Pier, the main Ferry terminus built 1810-18, later extended for steamships in 1828. At the pier head there is the Signal Tower with hexagonal copper-domed lantern and Tower House which was the ferry office. North Queensferry was designated a conservation area in 1984, the tourist attractions are the Bridges and Deep Sea World, a marine aquarium.
