The village of Barton Mills lies on the south bank of the River Lark, in the Forest Heath district of Suffolk. It is accessible via the A11 and is very close to the junction of the A11 and A1101. The nearest major town is Newmarket which is about seven miles away, with the ancient university city of Cambridge is a little over twenty miles away. This picturesque village had a population of just over 850 according to the 2001 census. However, this shows that it has grown considerably since the time of the Domesday Book of 1087 which recorded a figure of 24 inhabitants at that time. The village has two main claims to fame. Firstly, it was the preferred holiday retreat for Alexander Fleming, the man who discovered penicillin. Secondly, it is home to the annual Scarecrow Festival. This is a two day event which features music, dancing, food, stalls and, of course, scarecrows! The event even made into the Guinness Book of Records for 'the most scarecrows ever built at any one time'. The area boasts fine walking opportunities and there is plenty of accommodation nearby, including the Travelodge at the nearby Fiveways Roundabout and the beautiful Olde Bull Hotel, which is believed to have been visited by Queen Elizabeth I.
