Needham Market lies in mid Suffolk between the towns of Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds. The town lies in the Gipping valley and the River Gipping flows through the town. It is possible to walk the 17 miles from Needham Market to Stowmarket along the Gipping valley footpath. The town grew around the wool combing industry until the plague swept through the town from 1663 to 1665 leading to it becoming isolated. Notable buildings in the town include St John the Baptist church which stands in Needham High Street amongst the shops and houses. It has no churchyard or tower but the unusual clock tower was purchased by public subscription in 1882. The Ancient House, on Hawks Mill Street, was built in 1480 and has been much restored. Hawks Mill Street leads to Hawks Mill. There has been a mill on this site since Doomsday times. The present building dates from 1887 and is now converted to residential use. There are many other historic buildings in the town. The whole High Street is designated a Conservation Area. There are several pubs including The Limes Hotel and The Swan Inn on the High Street. Needham Lake, a former clay pit, provides leisure facilities and a wildlife habitat.
