Stoke by Nayland is in the county of Suffolk, close to the border with Essex, in what is referred to as Constable Country. It contains a church, St Mary, with a 120 foot perpendicular red brick tower which remains much as it was in the fifteenth century and as it appeared in several of Constable’s paintings. The village contains many cottages painted in various shades of Suffolk pink, the traditional Suffolk colour that houses would have been painted in. There are also several timber framed buildings including The Village Hall and the old Guildhall. All surround a large recreation field which makes up the centre of the village. The village has two pubs, The Angel Inn and The Crown, originally built in 1530. Stoke by Nayland is about 1.5 miles from Nayland and stands on a ridge overlooking the Stour and Box valleys. Immediately to the north of the village lies the hamlet of Scotland Street. Stoke By Nayland is home to a golf club with two championship eighteen hole courses set in 300 acres of countryside and named after famous painters. The Gainsborough is the longest established of the two, and The Constable has amazing views of the church of St Mary.
