The High Suffolk town of Stowmarket lies roughly halfway between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, and it has always enjoyed good communications links. As well as being on the A14 arterial road Stowmarket is on the main London-Norwich railway line, and its main river, the Gipping (there is also the delightfully named river Rat to the south), was canalised with locks at the end of the 18th century, conveniently feeding into the Orwell estuary at Ipswich. Whilst the waterway has declined in transport terms its towpath remains as a pleasant route for walkers from Stowmarket all the way to Ipswich docks. Stow is said to mean “principal place” in Anglo-Saxon, and the town served as a major market centre for the agricultural district around it for centuries. It was granted a market charter in 1347, and still has twice-weekly markets to this day. There are many fine buildings in the town, but its two main attractions are the parish church and the Museum of East Anglian Life (although the mock-Elizabethan railway station is certainly of curiosity value). The church of St Peter and St Mary is one of East Anglia’s “decorated” era glories, dating from the 14th century. Lovers of the quaint will enjoy its wig-stand. Abbots Hall Museum of East Anglian Life, opened in 1967, has grown to occupy a 70 acre site, offering a graphic insight into rural life through the centuries, and is one of the finest outdoor museums in the country. As would be expected of a town of some 16,000 people, Stowmarket has good shopping and hospitality facilities, with plenty of traditional pubs to be explored – this is the county which produces Greene King and Adnams ales, after all.
