In a county of pleasant villages Westleton is one of the prettiest, a surviving and thriving piece of an older and gentler England, regular winner of best kept village titles. The extensive village green and its avenue of mature limes, is at the heart of the village in more ways than one, the ground dipping down to the duck pond. Here the White Horse Inn is found; its gardens invaded by ducklings relying on the kindness of drinkers, and here is held the annual summer fair. Another major event in the life of the village centres on the picturesque thatched church of St Peter’s, for here Westleton holds its annual wild flower festival. There are many other reasons to wander the village, including the Grange, an early 19th century building, and the far older Moor House, an Elizabethan pile with fine gables. It seems strange that once this place was a coaching stop, but the Crown Inn, its red bricks weathered by time, was such, its origins going back to the 12th century. In coaching days Westleton stood on the coastal route to Dunwich, just two miles further east, and on up to Southwold and beyond. Dunwich, once an important port, was largely swallowed by the sea in a great storm in 1286. Westleton, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is surrounded by nature reserves, and is a birder’s paradise. Minsmere is a mile or so south east; Darsham Marshes the same to the west, and Westleton Heath itself is a wonderfully preserved habitat for birds like the nightjar and stonechat, and for rare invertebrates like the endangered white admiral butterfly.
