Alloway is a historic village in South Ayrshire in Scotland situated on the River Doon, 2 miles south of Ayr. The village grew around the original church dating back to c1200, replaced by the Auld Kirk in 1516, although a nearby holy well associated with St Mungo suggests the area would have been inhabited even earlier. Alloway is famous as the birthplace of Scotland’s National Bard; Robert Burns (1759-96) Visitor attractions include Burns’ Birthplace Cottage and Museum which stands in Alloway’s main street with its thatched roof, displays, letters and manuscripts. The ‘Tam O’ Shanter’ Experience Visitor Centre celebrates and explains Burns’ most famous poem, landmarks in the village include the13th century Brig O’ Doon, a humpbacked bridge over the River Doon, the ruins of the 16th century Auld Kirk and the Burns Monument, which was built in1823 and stands in the Burns National Heritage Park. The tranquil village has large areas of parkland and countryside and is a popular tourist destination; there is a selection of holiday accommodation including a holiday park, shops and amenities, cafés and restaurants. Other attractions nearby include well-known Ayr Racecourse home to the Scottish Grand National horse race, a selection of golf courses, walking tours, Electric Brae and a farm park with rare and exotic animals, birds and pets, quad-biking and climbing towers.
