Out of the way doesn’t begin to do justice to the location of the little village of Blackwaterfoot on the western coast of Arran, though it is one of the easier places to get to on that lovely island, linked to the more populated eastern side by Thomas Telford’s engineering feat ‘the String Road’. Many visitors arrive in Blackwaterfoot by boat, though its quaint harbour with an ancient stone bridge crossing the water could not be called vast. If it is peace and quiet you are after, and some fresh air to blow away the cobwebs, this village will do you. The lengthy beach just asks to be strolled along. The famous 12-hole Shiskine golf course will beckon every player worth his or her tee. The amateur historian, or just those with curiosity, will be drawn to visit the King’s Cave nearby, where Robert the Bruce encountered the legendary spider that persuaded him to try again (or so it is claimed!), and the considerable Iron Age fort at Drumadoon Point – or a mile or two further on, the Auchagallon Stone Circle. And with hills aplenty behind you and views across Kilbrannan Sound across to Kintyre, the scenery will stay with you long after your trip
