Brodick is the largest settlement on the Isle of Arran, in the Firth of Clyde, Ayrshire, Scotland, one of the most southerly Scottish Islands. Access to Arran is via a 55 minute ferry-crossing from Ardrossan to Brodick Harbour. Arran is known as ‘Scotland in Miniature,’ routed in Celtic myths and legends with the best that Scotland has to offer including golf, castles, distilleries, outdoor activities, scenery and gourmet food. Brodick Harbour has a picturesque seafront, beautiful sandy beaches and magnificent mountain backdrop. Brodick Castle is a long narrow structure of reddish sandstone. The oldest section is the east tower built c1588 by the 2nd Earl of Arran, Queen Mary’s guardian. In 1651 Cromwell occupied and fortified the castle extending it with a tower-house. In 1895 the Duchess of Montrose replanted the gardens; now the finest in Scotland. The Castle and Gardens are maintained by the National Trust for Scotland, open to the public and a major tourist attraction. Brodick is a popular holiday resort, a haven for walkers and climbers, with activities for all the family. The centre of Brodick lies along the landward side of the main road with supermarket, shops, pubs, hotels, B&B’s and cafes. Further north lies the Arran Heritage Museum set in traditional farmhouse.
