Crosshouse is a large village in East Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland situated on the Carmel Water, 2 miles west of Kilmarnock. The village developed during the 19th century to house the workers of the local coal mining and brick-making industries. Notable residents include, Andrew Fisher (1862 – 1928), who was born in Crosshouse, emigrated to Australia in 1885 and became the fifth Prime Minister of Australia from 1908-1915; a memorial cairn sits in the village beside the Carmel Burn. The tranquil village is a popular tourist destination ideal for walker, cyclists, anglers, golfers and nature-watchers; it has holiday accommodation, shops, a bakery with tea-room, restaurants and pubs, a hospital, a bowling club and an 18-hole golf course. The impressive red-sandstone church has a 60ft steeple and dates back to 1881. Other attractions include Dean Castle with visitor-centre and tea-room, a cinema, the Palace Theatre, The Galleon Centre with ice-rink, bowling and squash courts, The Magnum Leisure Centre with swimming pool and fitness-centre and the Dick Institute with two art galleries and three museums. Eglinton Country Park has a loch with fishing facilities and Kay Park has a swing-park and pond. There is a beach, harbour and maritime museum in neighbouring Irvine, the 100 mile long Ayrshire Coastal Path starts nearby at Glenapp finishes in Skelmorie, and the virtually traffic free Cunningham Cycleway route connects Kilmarnock with Ardrossan.
