Dalrymple is a small village lying on the River Doon, to the north of the Doon Valley, in East Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland, situated approximately 5 miles south of Ayr and 7 miles north-east of Maybole. The river marks the southern boundary to this agricultural area. The barony of Dalrymple was created in the 13th century Translated from Gaelic Dalrymple means ‘field of the crooked river’ and is an accurate description of the setting of this picturesque village which was the scene of Robert Burns school days. Although the parish of Dalrymple is ancient, the actual village only dates from c1800, originally with only a few houses built around the church. The local laird laid out the village with two short streets, 19th century single story white-washed cottages were then built and a bridge crossing the River Doon in 1849. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking, rambling, cycling and nature watching. The village has shops, amenities and pubs offering accommodation and good food. East Ayrshire has a range of tourist attractions and sport and leisure activities including numerous golf courses, horse-racing at Ayr Racecourse and Loudoun Castle Family Theme park a popular venue for all the family.
