Situated by the River Garnock on the west coast of Scotland in North Ayrshire is the small town of Kilbirnie. Located ten miles north of Irvine, the village arose around the ‘Auld Kirk,’ a 15th century parish church, one of the oldest churches still in use today; in 1740 there were only three houses in the village. Kilbirnie derived its name from the parish church. The church was dedicated to Saint Birinie and in celtic the prefix Kil means church. The ‘Auld Kirk’ is a tourist attraction containing the Crawford Gallery and in the grounds is a mausoleum dedicated to the Crawford family. The Walker Hall is memorial hall dedicated to Dr Walker one of the villages first physicians. Another historical building is the ruins of Glengarnock Castle a 15th century keep laying 2 miles north of Kilbirnie. Kilbirnie Loch is well used for sporting activities including fishing and water skiing; there is a rugby pitch on the shore edge. Kilbirnie has an 18 hole golf course and there is a swimming pool in nearby Garnock. The village has a variety of shops and amenities including a Tesco, a garage, Library, Inns and The Moorpark Hotel. Traditional Horse Fairs are still held regularly in the village.
