Kilmarnock is a large industrial town situated between Glasgow and Ayr on the River Irvine in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Kilmarnock is thought to have been established when 7th century Saint Mernoc or Marnoch, founded the church. Kilmarnock became a burgh of barony in 1591. The town is noted for its connection with Robert Burns when he came to Kilmarnock in 1786 to have the first edition of his works published. Kilmarnock developed during the Industrial Revolution in 19th century with the arrival of the railway. Kilmarnock grew from a modest settlement into a town with planned Victorian architecture, one of the finest being John Finnie Street. Dean Castle stands at the northern end of town; seriously damaged by fire in 1735 then restored during the 20th century. The castle is open to the public displaying collections of medieval armour and Van Raalte musical instruments. Places of interest include Laigh Park, Kay Park with The Burns monument and the Dick Institute 1901. Kilmarnock is a busy town with pedestrianized shopping streets and large chain stores, restaurants, hotels, bingo hall, Galleon Leisure Centre with swimming pool, ice-rink, squash-courts, sauna and gym. Kilmarnock has 2 golf courses and home to Kilmarnock Football Club with their stadium at Rugby Park.
