Prestwick is a town in south Ayrshire, situated near Ayr and Troon. Prestwick is the oldest Royal burgh in Scotland with the charter dated 1600.
Prestwick is famous for its International Airport and as the home of golf.
The airfield was developed in 1935 and used during World War II as an RAF Headquarters before becoming Glasgow Prestwick International Airport. In 1960 Elvis Presley, had a two hour stop-over here during his National Service.
Golf has been popular since the Old Course opened in 1851. The first Open Championship was hosted here in 1860.
The Chapel of St Ninian was the site of a leper hospital founded by Robert I. Bruce’s Well is situated next to the church, Bruce is said to have drunk from the well to cure his skin disease.
Prestwick is a popular tourist resort with sea-front, in the heart of Robert Burns Country, with hotels, guest houses, pubs, cafés, restaurants, churches and many attractions of historic interest. The town has a variety of shops and amenities, in the town-centre stands the ancient market cross and the Town Hall built in1837 with gothic spire. Prestwick has a swimming pool, health and fitness clubs, tennis, bowling, cricket, golf clubs and a kid’s entertainment centre on the esplanade.
